Michela Cattai began her creative journey in 1984 when she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice to study Painting under the guidance of Fabrizio Plessi.
Later, she enrolled in a degree in Design, participating in the course “Communicating Vessels” held by Ennio Chiggio, a member of Group N in Padua, thanks to whom she began assimilating the concepts of semantics and semiotics in the field of Italian design, focusing her study on glass.
Shortly after, she was selected to participate in a collective exhibition at the Murano Glass Museum.
Since 1992, she has been artistic director of her namesake gallery, Gallery Michela Cattai ART+DESIGN, located in the heart of Brera, Milan, where she currently resides. Her gallery holds focus on the Italian artistic production of the 50s to the 70s, with the aim of reconstructing a meaningful dialogue between artistic and design practices.
Among some the most prominent names in the gallery are Gianni Colombo, Vincenzo Agnetti, Paolo Icaro, Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi, and Franco Albini, manufacturers of Fontana Arte, Venini.
Cattai’s creativity takes her on a journey through continuous experimentation, leading to her unique pieces that represent her history and identity.
The result of her most recent research manifests a dialogue between glass and recycled materials, through which the artist reflects her desire to draw the public’s attention to a global matter, whilst concurrently challenging the traditional rules of working glass.
Her work aims to raise awareness towards the preservation of our surroundings as she creates long- lasting pieces to live on for future generations.
In April 2017, Cattai was invited to present her research as a solo exhibition at the Chamber of Deputies, in the Sala del Cenacolo, Rome and again in 2019 at the Italian Cultural Institute of Tokyo, Japan.
She has taken part in several solo and group exhibitions listed below, enlightening the interest of many different museums around the world.
Her works are currently displayed in several important international places, from the Stiftung Museum Kunst Palast of Düsseldorf to Europeana of DDB (German Digital Library), from Murano Glass Museum to Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice, to the Italian Embassy’s permanent collection of modern art in Tokyo and to the Carlo Rizzarda Gallery of Modern Art in Feltre.
In 2019, she was appointed the position of Art Director for Venini.
From 2023 she dedicated herself to her own personal practice.
